Dangerous Monarch

Dangerous Monarch, “Myles”

Bio: Myles was a Kentucky bred gelding who was owner surrendered to us on June 7, 2013. He arrived severely underweight with an untreated, severe hoof abscess that made it difficult for him to walk. We were his 5th owners since retiring from Finger Lakes Race Track in October 2011. We were able to contact his second post-racing owner who rescued him from a bad situation and was very disappointed to find out he was in poor shape again. Myles saw our veterinarian and farrier during the first week of his arrival to have his weight and lameness evaluated. He was put on a re-feeding program so as not to overload his body and was placed on antibiotics coupled with daily epsom salt soaks and poulticing to try and draw out his hoof abscess. Our farrier also opened up a spot in his hoof to promote draining. Myles was restricted to stall rest per our vet until his lameness and weight issues were improved.

Myles’ hoof abscess initially blew out of his coronary band within the first few weeks of his rehab and his lameness decreased. He continued seeing our farrier every 2-3 weeks and grew accustomed to his daily salt soaks. By late August, his lameness was resolved and he was cleared for light riding and controlled turnout by our vet. Myles was back to an acceptable weight and enjoyed having a job and being able to blow off steam in his small private pasture. After a few weeks, his lameness returned and he was placed back onto antibiotics and was restricted to his stall again, with continued visits from our vet and farrier. In September, we changed farriers and Myles continued his treatments.

By November, Myles’ lameness had increased despite the best efforts of our veterinarian and farrier. Cornell Ambulatory came to take x-rays of his hoof at which time it was discovered that the abscess had gone to the joint causing irreparable damage to his coffin bone. He was given a very poor prognosis even with surgery, and the decision was made to humanely euthanize him. Myles knew love and care at the end of his life, surrounded by friends both human and animal alike. He enjoyed a warm, dry stall and plenty of good quality food, water and treats. He was buried on the property, never to be forgotten.

Myles was sold at the Keeneland Association November 2007 Breeding Stock sale (Hip #1401) for $250,000 as a weanling. He returned for the Keeneland Association September 2008 sale as a yearling (Hip #1044) and was listed for $240,000 but no buyers met the reserve. He then went through the Fasig-Tipton Florida Select February 2009 sale (Hip #34) and sold for $150,000 as a two year old in training. Myles went on to start racing as a 3 year old. He >raced 20 times, with 2 firsts, 2 seconds, and 2 thirds for a grand earnings of $17,848. He was Breeders’ Cup Nominated and has five half siblings.
