Potnia’s Song

Potnia’s Song, “Melody”

Bio: Melody was a 2008 New York bred warhorse mare who retired from Finger Lakes Race Track. We originally met her in November 2013 while at the track looking at horses. She and another mare, Mommy’s Dearest, were given away to a “good home” on September 13, 2014 only to end up with a dealer just a month later on October 16, 2014. We recognized an ad on Craigslist for two thoroughbreds as being from a dealer we have previously gotten two thoroughbreds from. We networked quickly and were able to purchase both thanks to a generous donation from John Murrel. Both arrived to our facility on October 19, 2014.

It was apparent upon arriving that something was wrong with Melody. Both horses were turned out in our outdoor arena and given fresh hay and water. Melody immediately laid down and wasn’t eating. Vets were called and she was given banamine and walked due to her colicky nature. She improved but became worse again the following day. Over the course of the next few days, Sunday through Wednesday, Melody was seen by our vets three times. She was tubed, given fluids and acupuncture for supportive care, as well as banamine. Melody had times where she showed improvement, passing manure with normal vitals, but by Wednesday, October 22, 2014 the choice was made to help Melody cross the rainbow bridge as her condition was not improving. She passed peacefully and is now buried on the property, always to be remembered.

Melody started racing as a three year old and earned $57,365 from 58 starts – 2 firsts, 3 seconds and 3 thirds.
